Welcome to the collection of materials dedicated to the Ancient Slavs — one of the most important ethno-cultural layers of Eastern Europe in antiquity. If you are interested in the historical, archaeological, and cultural aspects of the life of Slavic tribes, you will find here a lot of useful information and illustrations reflecting the diversity and characteristics of this people.

The Ancient Slavs represent a group of Indo-European tribes that formed in the territory of Central and Eastern Europe approximately at the end of the 1st millennium BCE and the beginning of the Common Era. Their settlement covered vast areas from the Baltic region to the Carpathians, from the Oder River to the Dnieper and the Don. In this region, the Ancient Slavs practiced agriculture, animal husbandry, and crafts, utilizing natural resources depending on local conditions and seasonal changes.

The habitat of the Ancient Slavs included forests, river valleys, lakes, and plains with fertile soil. Their settlements were usually small rural communities located near water and fertile lands. Important elements of their environment also included hunting grounds and natural routes for trade and migrations.

The architectural and economic features of Ancient Slavic settlements reflected adaptation to climatic conditions and the natural landscape: dwellings were built from wood and clay, including dugouts and above-ground houses, surrounded by gardens and pastures. In daily life, the use of bronze and iron tools, pottery crafts, and various forms of agriculture, including hoe and shifting cultivation, played a significant role.

The culture of the Ancient Slavs contains a rich heritage in the form of mythology, religious beliefs, rituals, and traditions connected with natural cycles and phenomena. This was also reflected in material monuments such as pottery with characteristic ornamentation, household items and weapons, as well as burial mound complexes and sanctuaries.

Understanding the Ancient Slavs as a people closely linked to their natural environment and the historical transformations of the region helps to realize the role of their heritage in shaping later cultural and ethnic maps of Eastern Europe. Their historical trace extends from early tribal unions to the formation of the first Slavic states in the Middle Ages.

This collection of materials is devoted to various aspects of the life and environment of the Ancient Slavs: from archaeological research findings to ethnographic reconstructions, including their natural surroundings, economy, everyday and ritual realities, as well as relations with neighboring cultures and peoples.
