Antiquity is a general term for the cultural and historical period encompassing the ancient Greek and ancient Roman civilizations, as well as their material and spiritual heritage. During this era, the foundations of Western culture, science, philosophy, art, and architecture were formed, which had a tremendous influence on subsequent periods.

In antiquity, political systems, philosophical doctrines, and literary genres developed; architectural monuments, sculptures, and works of art were created that are still studied and valued today. This term covers many aspects: from large public structures—temples, amphitheaters, forums, aqueducts—to everyday objects such as pottery, jewelry, tools, and weapons.

The ancient world featured diverse landscapes where ancient cities and settlements thrived. In Greece and Italy, these were mountainous and maritime environments with a developed network of city-states, and along the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, densely populated regions with active trade and cultural exchange. Ancient structures were often integrated into natural settings, reflecting the characteristics of the terrain—plains, hills, rivers, and coastlines.

Antique objects and ruins related to this period can be found in a variety of historical and geographical contexts—from urban centers to rural landscapes washed by sea waves. Natural conditions often influenced architectural decisions and urban planning, as well as the development of agriculture, crafts, and commerce.

The study and examination of ancient artifacts and monuments require attention to detail, their historical origin, and their place in the advancement of civilization. Antiquities include architectural elements, sculptures, bas-reliefs, ceramic products, and tools that reveal the way of life and worldview of ancient peoples.

Diving into the topic of antiquity provides an opportunity to understand not only the material world of ancient cultures but also their social structures, belief systems, artistic ideals, and achievements in science and technology. This term encompasses a significant layer of human history, opening a window into an era that became the foundation for much of modern knowledge.
