Discover the World of Arugula

Arugula is not just a green leaf; it is a source of rich flavor and health that has rightfully earned popularity in cooking. This spicy green, also known as rocket, has long been an indispensable element of many dishes due to its distinctive spiciness and rich aroma. It is especially prized in Mediterranean cuisine, where it is added to salads, pastas, pizzas, and as a garnish for meats and fish dishes.

Physical Characteristics: Arugula has narrow, long, and slightly serrated leaves of dark green color. They grow on a thin stem and can reach lengths of up to 30 cm. The flowers of arugula, which arise during flowering, are white or yellowish, sometimes with purple streaks, and are also edible, adding a unique flavor to salads or as a garnish for dishes.

Environment and Cultivation: This crop prefers sunny spots and well-drained soils. Arugula easily grows in garden beds, but it can also be found in the wild, in meadows and fields, underscoring its adaptability to various climatic conditions. Thanks to its frost resistance, arugula can delight us with fresh leaves even in colder months, making it popular among gardeners.

Seasonal Variations: The most active growing period for arugula is in spring and fall. During this time, you can witness its lush growth and vibrant green color. The leaves are especially juicy and aromatic at this time. In summer, under high temperatures, it may flower faster, but even in this state, it retains its nutritional properties.

Culinary Uses: Arugula is versatile, allowing it to be paired with a variety of products. When added to salads, it provides freshness and a tangy flavor. Accordingly, it is often combined with tomatoes, olive oil, cheese, and nuts. Arugula also works wonderfully for making pesto sauces and as a spicy addition to bruschettas or other appetizers.
