Welcome to the collection of images dedicated to Japanese armor — unique historical protective structures that played a key role in the culture and military history of Japan. If you are interested in the traditional means of protection used by samurai and warriors during Japan's feudal period, here you will find many quality photographs and illustrations of such artifacts, available for free use.

Japanese armor consists of complex constructions formed from many interconnected elements, including plates, lacing, and metal and leather details. They cover the torso, shoulders, arms, legs, and head, ensuring mobility and safety. The armor includes characteristic parts such as:

  • Kabuto — a helmet with various decorations and neck protection;
  • Men-yo — a mask for the face or chin protection;
  • Dōzō-garu — chest protection;
  • Ko-ga-naito — protection for the arms and shoulders;
  • Sasae-garu and Hanē-garu — elements to protect the thighs and legs.

Armors were created using a variety of materials, among which metal, leather, silk lacing, and lacquer predominated. Their design allowed for the even distribution of weight, ensuring both protection and mobility in battle.

Japanese armor is closely associated with the military traditions of samurai and reflects the social and technological changes occurring in Japanese society over several centuries. The collection features armor from different epochs and styles, including early prototypes as well as later samples from the Edo period, allowing for an exploration of the evolution of forms and manufacturing methods.

Photographs of the armor may be accompanied by images of weapons, rituals, and the surrounding environment, indicating a comprehensive approach to the military craft in traditional Japanese culture. Such images are useful for historians, designers, collectors, and anyone interested in ethnography and military equipment.
