Marine navigation is the art and science of determining the position and route of a vessel on bodies of water, including seas, oceans, bays, and straits. It encompasses a set of methods and tools that allow captains and navigators to safely and accurately orient themselves in the marine environment, using various navigational instruments, charts, and navigation systems.

Marine navigation involves key elements such as nautical charts, compasses, sextants, radionavigation systems, GPS, and modern electronic charting systems. These tools enable the determination of coordinates, course calculation, speed measurement, as well as monitoring changes in the vessel's position relative to coastlines, islands, underwater obstacles, and other objects along the route.

Marine navigation is closely linked with hydrography and meteorology, as accurate knowledge of the seafloor terrain, currents, tides, and weather conditions is critical for forecasting and planning a safe voyage. An important part of the navigation process is analyzing and minimizing risks related to natural and man-made factors affecting maritime transport.

Types of navigation include visual navigation using visible landmarks, celestial navigation based on the position of the sun, moon, and stars, radionavigation relying on radio signals, as well as satellite navigation utilizing global navigation satellite systems. All these methods provide a comprehensive approach to managing a marine vessel under various conditions and voyage distances.

Marine navigation is applied in various sectors: commercial shipping, the fishing industry, the navy, scientific expeditions, and the tourism industry. It plays a key role in the development of maritime transport and ensures the safety, efficiency, and accuracy of movement along marine routes.

The collection dedicated to marine navigation includes images illustrating charts with navigation lines, traditional and modern navigation instruments, sea vessels against the backdrop of open water, elements of seaports, as well as moments capturing ship crews working with navigation equipment. Such materials reflect the diversity of navigation aspects and its importance to marine activities.
