Water bath is a common laboratory and kitchen method used to maintain a stable temperature when heating various substances. It consists of a container filled with water that is heated to a certain temperature and serves as a medium for gentle and even heating of a vessel containing the substance inside. This heating method prevents direct contact with an open heat source, which is important when working with sensitive or flammable materials.

Water baths can come in various sizes and shapes — from small laboratory devices to specialized kitchen equipment. In laboratory practice, they often consist of a metal or glass container with a thermostat that maintains a constant temperature at the desired level, usually in the range from the melting point of ice to the boiling point of water. This allows carrying out reactions, measurements, and melting processes under controlled and stabilized heating conditions.

In cooking, a water bath is used for preparing dishes by the sous-vide method, melting chocolate, making creams, and preparing sauces and desserts that require precise temperature control. It is most commonly known as bain-marie and consists of a container of hot water into which a container with ingredients is placed, ensuring even heating without the risk of overheating or burning.

Physically, a water bath consists of a water reservoir — which can be a metal, glass, or plastic container — as well as an additional inner vessel where the material to be heated is placed. Such setups are often equipped with lids, thermometers, or electronic controllers for precise temperature maintenance and prevention of water evaporation.

The water bath is widely used in chemistry, biology, medicine, cooking, and industry for processes requiring gentle and even heating. Its versatility and simplicity make the water bath an indispensable tool that provides safe, efficient, and controlled thermal treatment of samples and products under study or processing.
